50th Anniversary

ABC Childcare Center will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in business this April. We look back on the past 50 years with great pride and accomplishment in caring for many children and families in the Savannah and Tybee area.

When we trace it back to where it all began, ABC started with humble beginnings. Laura Mackey started ABC in a one-room apartment she purchased on Tybee Island. After jumping through some serious hoops to get a permit from the city to start ABC, Mrs. Mackey would have to reach families looking for childcare. She would slowly grow word of mouth about the operation by going to her local laundry mats and putting up flyers.

Childcare, specifically, was always something that Laura felt very drawn to. She said, "when I was a teenager, I babysat a-lot. I just loved children. So starting a career in childcare was just something that made sense."

Starting with just three children, Mrs. Mackey was determined to give ABC every opportunity to grow to its full potential. Not long after the opening of ABC, the childcare center began to grow. They eventually needed to open more locations. Mrs. Mackey started seeing a need for 24-hour childcare services, and they were a full-time operation before long. ABC provided many single parents with childcare and relieved many healthcare providers.

ABC has been alive every second of the last 50 years, from swimming, dancing, archery, rollerskating, and much more. ABC has always provided children with exciting and memorable experiences they take with them for the rest of their lives.

ABC started Camp Kids Country Club, which would take children to the lovely Red Gate Farms during the summer months for lots of fun summer activities that allowed the children to be out of the house and experiences nature during the summer months. This was a very fulfilling endeavor when we saw how happy children were to be in a country setting.

We have watched many different children come in and out of our doors over the years, but we never get over the sense of accomplishment we feel when we watch them leave. Our children learn to laugh and have fun while also learning a lot about themselves along the way.

Since we first opened our doors, we have always made the children our top priority. It has always been important for the children of ABC to feel they are a part of our family when they come to us. ABC has always been about making your children feel a part of our great big family, providing every child with the love and care they deserve.
