History of ABC Educational Childcare Center

ABC Educational Childcare Center, INC. (ABC) was established by Laura and Fred Mackey in January 1972. At this time it was named ABC School. The first center was located on Tybee Island, GA. In the beginning it was literally a “one room school house.” It was also the first day care facility on Tybee Island and City Hall had to create a business license for the school.

In 1976 the Mackey’s recognized the tremendous need for child care in Savannah and the surrounding area and opened an ABC Educational Childcare Center on 48th Street. This was just the beginning of a long, successful partnership with parents seeking the best in nursing, educational experiences for their children. Over the next twenty years, four more centers were started in order to meet the demand for child care.

In 1987, the Mackey children. then ages 10, 11, and 13 decided they had outgrown the need for child care at the day care center during the summer months. However, Laura and Fred decided school aged children do indeed need adult direction during the summer and they founded the Camp Kids Country Club for children six to twelve years of age. At Camp Kids Country Club children have the freedom to enjoy and explore a country setting while still having the direction of safety precautions and trained, responsible recreation counselors. Camp Kids Country club is located at beautiful Red Gate Farms.

Since the beginning of 1972 to the present, the ABC founders and their team have continued to seek innovative ways to ensure ABC’s children continue to have the very best child care. Working together we can make the difference in lives of young children.
